The LES provides a pyranometer calibration service using a Kipp & Zonen CMP 22 pyranometer (class A spectrally flat pyranometer, ISO standard 9060:2018) as a secondary standard, which was calibrated in 2014 against a standard from the World Radiation Center (PMOD/WRC) of Davos, with traceability to the world radiometric reference.

In September 2018, our KZ-CMP 22 standard participated, together with teams from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Switzerland in an international intercomparison of standard secondary pyranometers and pyrheliometers, carried out at the Univ. de Santiago de Chile (activity financed by the German Metrology Institute – PTB). In this intercomparison, two secondary standards from the PMOD/World Radiation Center were used as reference, and their results are equivalent to a calibration traceable to the world standard. The details of this activity can be found in the LES technical report and in the final report of the intercomparison group. The sensitivity of the LES KZ CMP22 standard instrument presented a change of -0.1% in relation to its value in the 2014 calibration in PMOD/DAVOS.

Disclaimer: The LES is a research laboratory and is not (yet) a formally accredited center under the ISO 17025:2017 standard (Testing and calibration laboratories), although it follows all of its recommendations.

Calibrations in the LES are carried out according to the ISO 9847:1992 standard for the calibration of pyranometers by intercomparison against a reference pyranometer. The calibration platform is installed on the roof of the LES (Salto) and has the capacity to calibrate up to 20 pyranometers simultaneously.

The cost of calibration per pyranometer is of 10 U.R. (current price) and 5 U.R. in the case of photovoltaic radiometers. The equipment to be calibrated must remain in the LES between two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
